Ingredients for the best sausage gravy recipe:
- Breakfast sausage
- Flour
- Milk
- Seasonings: salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder
- Biscuits
This really is a simple recipe to make. To make the sausage gravy you'll start by browning the sausage. I like to use a mild breakfast sausage because our kids eat it but you could also make this with a spicy breakfast sausage. You can just break it up with a spatula (or even your hands before you turn the stove on).
As you cook the sausage, just keep breaking it up into smaller bits and cook until you don't see any more pink.
Once the sausage is cooked, you'll add in the flour. This is what will thicken the gravy. Cook the flour for a few minutes before adding in the milk. This will get rid of any raw flour taste as it incorporates into the sausage drippings. After cooking the flour, you can slowly add in the milk while whisking it in to combine.
As the milk begins to bubble, you can also add in the seasonings. The key to making it THE BEST sausage gravy recipe is the seasonings. You HAVE to season the gravy. It makes a world of difference!
And that's it! Once it bubbles up and thickens, you can serve it immediately over biscuits or store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
