This Old Fashioned Apple Crisp is an easy yet comforting dessert consisting of tart apples and warm spices. It's made with melted butter and oats for a super crispy topping.

How to make apple crisp

You want to first start by peeling, coring, and cutting your apples into cubes.(If you want to make it easier, you can order an apple peeler here.) I make my apple cubes about ½ - 1 inch in size so it's easy to eat.

What are the best apples for apple crisp:

Apple crisp contains a good amount of sugar so the tartness of the apples keeps this from being overly sweet. Granny smith apples are the absolute best for this recipe. You can use what you have on hand but a nice tart apple like granny smith is definitely the best!

After you've diced your apples, you can add the remaining filling ingredients and stir everything together until the apples are coated. Then you can add the apple filling to a greased 9x13 dish.

Once you've made the apple filling and added it to your baking dish, you can start the topping...the best part in my opinion!

What is apple crisp topping made of?

Apple crisp topping is typically made from a combination of sugar, oats, flour, and butter. They also usually have warm spices but that can depend on the fruit and recipe you're making. This old fashioned apple crisp recipe keeps the tradition flavors of nutmeg and cinnamon.

You're going to mix all of the dry topping ingredients together before adding the butter.

This recipe is really easy because it's made with melted butter. You don't need to worry about softening butter or cutting it into the flour. Just an easy drizzle of butter! You want to make sure that you're just gently mixing it into the dry ingredients and not making a ball of paste. Just fluff everything together until it's all incorporated.

Once mixed, it should look like the photo below. It's ok if you still see a bit of flour. As it heats up in the oven, everything will come together.

You can sprinkle the topping all over the apple filling in the baking dish. I wrote this recipe to have a very generous amount of topping because...why not!

Should I cover my apple crisp while baking?

This recipe does not need to be covered while baking. In fact, if you covered it, the topping would not get nice and crispy. So leave this uncovered and bake for about 45 minutes.

When the crisp has finished baking (and your house smells amazing) you'll want to let it sit for just about 15 minutes before serving. I like to serve this warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.
